your introduction to Erin LeCount

Erin LeCount is an Essex-born, Alt-Pop singer and songwriter, whose growing impact on the music scene is undeniable. She has been releasing music since 2022, and appeared on The Voice Kids in 2017, but only recently has she begun to garner the attention that she deserves.

LeCount has had a wildly successful summer, with the release of her latest EP ‘PAREIDOLIA’ in June, and a busy show lineup, including opening for Grammy award winning star Lorde at All Points East, her first shows in Australia, and Radio 1’s Big Weekend.

Her social media success is another factor in her recent growth. She has gathered a fiercely loyal fanbase, posting honest insights to the meanings behind her music, that her fans connect with on a deep level.

Videos of her festival performances have also gained traction, and in the last couple of weeks, LeCount’s Instagram following has nearly doubled to 379k followers. Only at the beginning of last year, she had 127k monthly listeners on Spotify, which has now shot up to 827k.

It’s no wonder why LeCount is so successful when she is completely self-taught, writing and producing her own works, and performs beautifully with a voice comparable to the likes of Florence Welch, Kate Bush, and Ethel Cain. She is captivating to watch perform live, even producing her music live on stage, and bringing a stage presence of a star.

Her songs are immersive and confessional, delving into topics including codependent and toxic relationships, the experience of living with an eating disorder and chronic illness, and imposter syndrome.

10. Marble Arch

This song explores the struggle of striving for perfection, and hollowing yourself out for approval. She describes bending like a marble arch, making pain appear to be something beautiful that others wish to stare at. The song hints at the struggles of disordered eating, which appears in multiple of her songs.

9. Heartbreak Hotel

Heartbreak hotel is about women being treated like rehab centres for poorly behaved men, it’s sharp and playful, but even more impressive considering LeCount wrote this song solo at only eighteen.

8. 808 HYMN

808 HYMN is about the loss of childhood naivety. Going from being a child feeling that the moon was following you home to something more sinister in adulthood as a woman. The production of this song is phenomenal, designed in a way which evokes the feeling panic in being chased.

7. I BELIEVE

I BELIEVE is written about fear of the future and ‘feeling apathetic about the world around you but living despite it’. It delves into the experience of being addicted to your own shame and suffering, guilt, and the attempt to give meaning to suffering.

6. THE CINEMA

LeCount’s most recent release is about the consuming desire to make art, or more specifically, the best art. It explores the fear of not reaching full potential, imposter syndrome, and what it’s like to be your own harshest critic. It’s extremely catchy and showcases her evolving talent superbly.

5. DON’T YOU SEE ME TRYING?

This song is about finding comfort and freedom in self-destruction, wanting someone to notice that you’re spiralling, and the urge to self-sabotage when things are good in a relationship. LeCount’s vocals shine on this track and is one of my personal favourites.

4. Silver Spoon

As LeCount’s most popular track, Silver Spoon has amassed over 23 million streams on Spotify for very good reason. It captures the emotions that come with the realisation that you grew up very differently to the person that you love, and the difficulty of feeling resentment about it.

3. MACHINE GHOST

MACHINE GHOST is about a range of painful emotions. LeCount has described the song in relation to dissociating when you’re intimate with someone, feeling disconnected from everything, putting yourself in risky situations and doing anything just to feel something. Many fans have found a strong connection to this song because of her honest portrayal of living with mental health struggles and chronic illness.

2. Godspeed

This song is about the anxiety and fear of watching someone enter the same situation you escaped, having stayed quiet about what happened to you. It specifically acts as a warning to an ex-partner’s new girlfriend, and to her younger self. This song is unbelievable to witness live, with the complexities of on-stage production.

1. ALICE

In my opinion, ALICE is Erin LeCount’s best work yet. It was released in February of this year as the last pre-release single of her EP PAREIDOLIA. It is written about a girl she knew, and misses, but doesn’t want back in her life. But ALICE has many hidden meanings, also written to a version of herself, and as a metaphor for addiction and disordered eating.

It describes a toxic love/hate relationship revolving around competition, and how in some situations, the person most alike to you, can be the worst person to be around.

The song parallels Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’, likening the downward psychological spiral LeCount faces to Alice falling down the rabbit hole into a spiral of chaos.

It’s so clever and beautifully written, and my biggest recommendation even if you only listen to one song – but trust me, you won’t just listen to one.
